This year, I got the unique opportunity to live and work on the island of Nosy Be, Madagascar. As I knew little to nothing about Madagascar, and nothing at all about Nosy Be, I decided to seize the chance and jump into a new adventure!
So here I am, sitting at the beach, listening to the calming waves of the Indian Ocean 🙂
Nosy Be, a stunning island off the northwest coast of Madagascar is known for its pristine beaches and vibrant culture, a haven for travelers seeking both relaxation and adventure. But for me, the true highlight is, of course, exploring the island’s incredible underwater world. Here’s a dive into my unforgettable diving experience in Nosy Be!
From the moment I landed, Nosy Be won me over with its lush landscapes and friendly locals. Once I’d settled into my new home, I couldn’t wait to dive into the crystal-clear waters that surround the island. One of the first places I dived was the famous Tanikely Marine Reserve. As soon as I went down into the 27°C warm, welcoming waters, I was welcomed by a vibrant underwater scene. The visibility was incredible, and the marine life was even more impressive. Schools of colourful fish swam around me, while curious sea turtles glided smoothly by. We even got to greet some sharks! The coral reefs were teeming with life, with each nook and cranny home to fascinating creatures.
After diving most of the dive spots a couple of times, my favorite dive spot is the Mitsio Wreck, lying at a perfect Nitrox depth of about 30m. But then, each dive brings something new and leaves me amazed by the variety and beauty of marine life in this area.
There’s more to Nosy Be than just diving.
Since I’ve been here, I’ve done a lot more than just dive: I spent my days exploring the island’s lush forests and other stunning islands nearby, but also visiting local markets and soaking up the rich Malagasy culture at a material arts competition. The islanders are really friendly and make me feel super welcome on this island.
In short, Nosy Be is the perfect place for divers. So if you want to come and visit me, grab your diving gear, bring your sense of adventure, and get ready to explore one of the most beautiful underwater worlds on the planet with me.
